By curriculum
16 agencies say they recruit for British curriculum schools, including FlyTeachers, Alliance Recruitment Agency and chk Education.
A British curriculum school abroad usually means a school that follows English National Curriculum stages and the English examination route of GCSE and A level, or Cambridge International equivalents. For teachers, the attraction is familiarity. The catch is that the label British is not regulated, so schools range from tightly inspected to loosely inspired by the UK.
The sections below explain how to tell the difference.
GOV.UK describes British Schools Overseas accreditation as the Department for Education's voluntary scheme. Schools must meet standards the department says are comparable to the independent school standards and the national minimum standards for boarding schools in England, and they must be inspected every three years.
Approved inspectorates are the Education Development Trust and the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Ofsted monitors them. A school that meets the standards is allocated a unique reference number on Get Information about Schools, and the Department for Education publishes the latest report for each.
COBIS says it has 350 member schools and 200 supporting associates, educating over 200,000 students with more than 17,000 teachers in over 80 countries, and runs an accreditation and compliance scheme. GOV.UK also lists AoBSO, BSME, FOBISIA, LAHC, NABSS and IAPS as bodies that support BSOs. A BSO must belong to one of them to offer statutory induction for early career teachers.
Expect many schools to ask for QTS or an equivalent, though each employer decides. The Department for Education's iQTS gives a route to QTS for people living outside England, with at least 24 weeks in a school, and states that those who teach outside the UK may not need to complete induction but can do so at a BSO.
