Recruitment agencies for international PE teachers

3 agencies in the directory say they recruit PE teachers for international schools, including FlyTeachers, International Teachers Plus and Teachers in UAE.

Physical education posts abroad frequently combine classroom teaching with coaching and a lead on sport or house systems. International schools often run fixtures against other schools in their region, so a PE teacher may also be a travel organiser and a safeguarding point for off-site trips.

Check what the full role covers before you compare offers.

What sits inside a PE contract

Ask whether the post includes after-school coaching, weekend fixtures, residential trips and holiday programmes, and whether those are paid or counted within contracted hours. Ask about pool, pitch and gym facilities and who maintains them.

If the school is accredited as a British School Overseas, the latest inspection report is published by the Department for Education. It is a useful place to read about facilities, staffing and pupil welfare.

Ask about insurance and medical cover for pupils on fixtures and for you as the member of staff in charge. The answers will tell you how seriously the school treats the sports programme.

Safeguarding on school trips

Schools accredited as British Schools Overseas have to meet standards which GOV.UK says are comparable with those for independent schools in England. Off-site activity is part of the welfare picture, so ask who is responsible for risk assessment and what training you will get.

It is also worth asking how the school handles heat, air quality or other conditions that limit outdoor activity in its location, and what indoor space it has as a fallback.

Qualification routes

The iQTS route covers the full range of secondary subjects taught in English schools for the 11 to 18 phase, according to the Department for Education, which would include PE. Training includes at least 24 weeks in a school where you live. Specialist coaching awards are separate and are set by sports governing bodies, not by the Department for Education.

Questions teachers ask

Do PE teachers need a coaching badge?

Employers decide. A governing body award can help for a particular sport, but the school will say if it is required.

Is the PE department usually large?

It varies with the school. Ask how many teachers and coaches share the programme.

Does a PE post include primary classes?

Often yes. Many schools expect a PE teacher to cover both phases. Clarify this before you accept.
