Kuwait's international teaching jobs are almost all in private schools, and GOV.UK explains why. Only Kuwaiti citizens are eligible to attend Kuwaiti public schools, so children of foreign nationals must attend private schools. That makes the private sector the place where expatriate families, and the teachers who serve them, are concentrated.
The Ministry of Education publishes live statistics that include a private education category, with 302 schools listed on 16 October 2026. The official paperwork for a UK teacher is heavier than in some neighbouring states, and the order in which you do things matters.
GOV.UK's living in Kuwait guidance says you must apply for a work entrance visa before you travel, and that your employer must apply for a work permit (iqama) on your behalf. Working without the correct visa can lead to deportation and a ban from all Gulf Co-operation Council countries for at least five years.
The FCDO entry requirements add that work visas, public and private sector, need further documents from the employer, and that a residency visa application needs a passport valid for at least two years. They also say employers should not keep your passport, which is worth raising before you sign.
To apply for a job you may need a UK criminal records check. To use it in Kuwait, GOV.UK says it must be notarised by a UK notary, legalised by the UK Legalisation Office, and attested at the Kuwaiti Embassy in London. Foreign qualifications need to be attested and legalised too.
This is a sequence with several offices, so ask the school or employer exactly which documents and which order they want before you pay for any of them.
The Department for Education keeps a list of British schools overseas that meet its accreditation standards under a voluntary inspection scheme. Counting its list as updated on 5 October 2026, there are 14 such schools in Kuwait. Kuwait is marked with an asterisk, which the DfE explains means schools there have met all the standards they can legally meet within local law.
Accreditation is voluntary, so a school's absence from that list tells you nothing either way. It is a useful check for a UK teacher who wants a school inspected against English-style standards.
FCDO advice dated 20 August 2026 says it no longer advises against all but essential travel to Kuwait, though it still carries a regional tensions section. It also reports that Terminal 1 at Kuwait International Airport remains closed and flight schedules remain reduced. Read the live page before you book.
