Teaching in Oman: what to know

Oman is unusual in that its Ministry of Education publishes, in English, how international schools are governed. International schools exist to serve the foreign community living in Oman and operate under a ministerial regulation issued in August 2006. They are run by a board elected by parents, and the Ministry's Office of International Schools has a say in who is hired.

That makes the Ministry the regulator to know, through its Directorate General of Private Schools. Its pages are not dated in detail, so treat them as a description of the system rather than a current checklist, and confirm each point with the school.

Hiring needs written consent from the Office of International Schools

The Ministry's page on international schools says the school administration must submit the names and details of candidates for director and for teaching, administrative and technical posts to the Office of International Schools, with the necessary documents. It adds that an appointment is not final until the Office gives written consent.

A separate Ministry page on private schools lists, among the supervising department's functions, determining whether candidates are fit to work in private schools in light of the Ministry's standards of efficiency. The Directorate General of Private Schools page lists a Recruitments Department and a Licenses Department. In practice, ask a school at what stage it submits your documents, and do not resign from a current post until consent is confirmed.

Which curriculum the school can teach

Under the Ministry's description, an international school may teach any curriculum and textbooks it wishes, provided it receives prior approval from the Ministry. The private schools page says the Ministry also officially approves programmes, qualifications and international approaches used by private schools, and tuition fees.

For a UK teacher, that means a British-curriculum post is possible, but it exists only because the school's chosen programme has been approved. The Department for Education's list of accredited British schools overseas, as updated on 5 October 2026, includes 2 schools in Oman.

Visas and the regional-tension warning

The FCDO's entry requirements say you can visit Oman for up to 14 days without a visa, and that you must have a visa to stay longer or for work. It also says Oman does not recognise dual nationality, which can matter if you hold both British and Omani passports.

The FCDO travel advice for Oman, last checked on 16 October 2026, includes a regional tensions section. Read it before making travel plans.

Questions teachers ask

Who regulates private and international schools in Oman?

The Ministry of Education, through its Directorate General of Private Schools. Its own pages describe supervision, licensing, recruitment and an Office of International Schools.

Does a school need approval before it can hire me?

The Ministry says an international school must submit candidates' details to the Office of International Schools and that an appointment is not final until it gives written consent.

Can I teach a British curriculum in Oman?

The Ministry says an international school may teach any curriculum it wishes with prior ministry approval, so British programmes are possible where approved.

Can I work on a 14-day visa-free entry?

No. The FCDO says you need a visa to stay longer than 14 days or to work. Ask the employer to arrange the right visa before you travel.
