Teaching in Qatar: what to know

Qatar's schools sit under one regulator, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE). The Ministry's own education overview describes a system of more than 310 private schools serving approximately 200,000 students, alongside 208 public schools with more than 196,000, with differing curricula serving a variety of nationalities.

For a UK teacher the private sector is the usual route. The practical hurdles are less about the classroom and more about the paperwork: a sponsored work residence permit, legalised documents and, depending on your contract, rules about leaving the country or changing employer.

Where MoEHE fits in a private school job

The Ministry licenses private schools, and its licensing page sets out the conditions an owner must meet and the documents they must supply, including a good conduct certificate for the owner and each partner. It also states that the Ministry recruits, licenses and supports teachers, though that wording sits in its general description of the K-12 system rather than a private-school hiring guide.

The Ministry's private education pages and its list of private schools and kindergartens are the official place to confirm that a school is licensed before you sign anything.

Sponsorship, the Qatar ID and the exit question

GOV.UK's living in Qatar guidance says you need a work residence permit, which requires an employment contract. Your employer acts as sponsor and arranges the permit and your Qatar ID card. You will need a medical exam and to give fingerprints, and you should not leave Qatar while the process is under way, because the authorities will reject the application and you would need to reapply.

The same guidance says whether and when you can change employer depends on the type of contract you hold, and points to separate FCDO guidance on when employees may need an exit permit to leave. Ask any school how both apply to your contract before you accept.

Legalising your degree for Qatar

GOV.UK states that you will need your foreign qualifications legalised. The FCDO's guidance sets out three steps for UK documents: legalisation by the UK Legalisation Office, attestation at the Qatar Embassy in London, then attestation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, which you or your employer can arrange. Build this into your timeline, since it is a sequence rather than one stamp.

FCDO travel advice for Qatar, last checked on 16 October 2026, carries a regional tensions section covering possible flight disruption. Read it in full before you commit.

Questions teachers ask

Who regulates private schools in Qatar?

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education licenses and oversees private schools, and publishes a list of licensed private schools and kindergartens on its website.

Can I start work on a visit visa in Qatar?

GOV.UK says you need a work residence permit, which requires an employment contract, with your employer acting as sponsor. Ask your employer which entry route they will use before you travel.

Do I need an exit permit to leave Qatar?

GOV.UK says some employees may need one, depending on circumstances. Read the FCDO guidance on employment matters and exit permits, and ask your school how it applies to your contract.

How do I get my UK degree accepted in Qatar?

It has to be legalised in three steps: the UK Legalisation Office, the Qatar Embassy in London, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar.
