Teaching jobs in Dubai: how to get one as a UK-trained teacher

You get a Dubai teaching job by being hired by a private school, which then secures KHDA's Appointment Notice. You need attested qualifications, police clearances and a UAE residence visa before you can teach.

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). It sets who can be appointed as a teacher, and it does so through the school, not through you. That changes the order of events. You find a school, the school and KHDA check you, and the visa follows.

This guide sets out that order using KHDA's own recruitment guide and UAE government pages. Where a detail comes from a recruiter's article instead of an official page, the text says so. Rules change, so confirm every step with your school before you spend money on paperwork.

Why the school, not you, starts the KHDA process

KHDA's technical guide for appointing teaching staff says a candidate must be issued an Appointment Notice by KHDA before taking up a post in a private school. The notice applies to one school and cannot be transferred. KHDA describes it as essentially a no objection certificate, and a teacher can hold only one at a time.

The UAE government's page on teaching qualifications says the same thing from the other direction: in Dubai, schools submit applicants' documents to KHDA for final approval. So there is no route where you apply to KHDA on your own and then look for work. A school has to select you first.

The qualification minimums KHDA sets

For primary and elementary teachers, KHDA's guide asks for a bachelor's degree in education, or a bachelor's degree in any subject plus at least six months of close supervision under a qualified, experienced teacher. It also asks for at least one year of recent experience in the phase, or six months of supervised teaching practice if you are new to the profession.

Specialist teachers need a recognised bachelor's degree relevant to the subject they teach, with the same experience rule. The guide does not name QTS or a PGCE, so ask the school how it will present your UK qualifications to KHDA. The UAE government page also says teachers need a teaching licence obtained by passing tests, and that Dubai details sit with KHDA, so ask the school whether any test applies to your post.

Getting your degree attested before an offer lands

KHDA requires fully attested and accredited qualifications that meet UAE equivalency requirements. The UAE government page says a degree from a university outside the UAE must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by the relevant embassy.

Teacher Horizons, a recruitment platform, describes the UK chain as FCDO verification, then the UAE Embassy, then UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. It says this typically takes four to eight weeks or longer and advises starting before you have a confirmed offer. Treat that timing as a recruiter's estimate, not an official one.

Police certificates, references and the residence visa

KHDA's guide says a teacher must hold a valid UAE residence visa, attested qualifications and a school contract in order to teach. Before starting, you also need a UAE police clearance certificate, a police clearance from every country you have lived in during the previous five years, and one from your home country if you lived there at any time in the previous ten. The school must also hold two written professional references, one from your most recent employer, and check KHDA's deregistration list.

Teacher Horizons says the school applies for your employment visa, followed by a medical exam, Emirates ID and the residence visa stamped in your passport. GOV.UK's UAE travel advice warns that working on a visit visa can lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation, and that you need a probationary work permit if you entered on a visit visa and want to work. Ask your school to confirm in writing what status you hold on each day.

Induction courses, timing and what happens if you leave

Before you teach, KHDA's guide requires four mandatory courses: the teachers' code of conduct, basic security, health, wellbeing, safety and risk management, child protection and safeguarding, and working with students of determination. It also requires you to sign the code of conduct, which covers conduct at work and on social media. Read it before you sign.

On timing, Teacher Horizons says most schools advertise from October for an August start, with the busiest window running October to February. Leaving later is also regulated. KHDA's 90-day rule applies a waiting period before a new Appointment Notice if you fail to serve your notice period, leave at a point other than the end of a term or semester, or skip the KHDA exit survey.

Questions teachers ask

Can I apply to KHDA directly for a teaching licence?

KHDA's guide says the candidate must be issued an Appointment Notice, and the UAE government page says Dubai schools submit applicants' documents to KHDA. In practice the process starts with a school offer. Ask the school which documents it needs from you.

Do I need QTS or a PGCE to teach in a Dubai private school?

KHDA's minimums are written around a degree in education, or a degree in any subject plus supervised practice for primary, and a subject degree for specialists. QTS and PGCE are not named in its qualification tables. Check with the school how it will evidence your qualification.

Can I start work on a visit visa while my paperwork is processed?

GOV.UK says people caught working on a visit visa face possible fines, imprisonment and deportation, and that a probationary work permit from the Ministry of Labour applies in some cases. Do not start teaching until the school confirms your status in writing.

How long does degree attestation take?

Teacher Horizons says four to eight weeks or longer, and recommends allowing at least six weeks when using the FCDO route. That is a recruiter's estimate. Start the process early and ask your school which steps it requires.

What if I want to move schools in Dubai later?

KHDA's 90-day rule says you must resign and serve your notice, leave on the last day of a term or semester, and submit the KHDA exit survey. Missing any of these can trigger a 90-day wait before a new Appointment Notice is issued.
