Recruitment agencies for international maths teachers

8 agencies in the directory say they recruit maths teachers for international schools, including FlyTeachers, Alliance Recruitment Agency and Educators Overseas.

Maths is one of the subjects where the syllabus a school follows changes your day-to-day job more than the country does. A department teaching Cambridge IGCSE, one teaching the IB Diploma and one following English GCSE all expect a maths teacher, but they will ask different things at interview.

Here is what a maths teacher can do to prepare before approaching agencies.

Match your syllabus experience to the post

Cambridge International says it has more than 10,000 schools in over 160 countries, so there is a good chance a maths post abroad is attached to a Cambridge course. If your experience is GCSE and A level, expect to be asked how you would adapt to another specification. Some schools provide training after you are hired, and it is worth asking about it up front.

Primary maths mastery as a leadership step

Maths has its own named primary NPQ. GOV.UK lists leading primary mathematics, which uses mastery approaches to lead maths teaching in a school, among the specialist NPQs. Course length across the NPQs ranges from 12 to 22 months. If you teach upper primary or work across the primary and secondary divide, mention it.

If you are training to qualify

The Department for Education's iQTS route requires a maths qualification equivalent to GCSE grade 4. It trains you to teach 5 to 11 or 11 to 18 and includes at least 24 weeks of school experience where you live. A maths graduate who has not yet got a teaching qualification can use it to become qualified while abroad.

Questions teachers ask

Which maths specifications do international schools use?

A mix. English GCSE and A level, Cambridge International, the IB Diploma and American courses are all used. Ask the recruiter for the specification before you apply.

Is a maths degree required?

Employers decide. For iQTS, GOV.UK requires a bachelor's degree and a maths qualification at GCSE grade 4 equivalent, not a maths degree.

Are maths teachers in short supply abroad?

We could not find a sourced shortage figure for international schools, so we do not claim one. Ask agencies how many maths vacancies they are currently handling.
