3 agencies in the directory say they recruit music teachers for international schools, including FlyTeachers, International Teachers Plus and Teachers in UAE.
Music teachers are hired for more than the timetable. International schools often expect a music teacher to run ensembles, choirs, productions and instrumental programmes that appear in the school's marketing. Your classroom hours may be only part of the working week.
Know what is expected before you accept an offer, and ask how much of the programme is already staffed.
Ask for the weekly timetable and a list of co-curricular activities attached to the post. Find out whether peripatetic instrumental teachers are employed by the school, and whether you are expected to coordinate them.
Ask about budgets for instruments and rooms, since these vary widely between schools and the advert will rarely say.
A useful test is to ask what the music department performs in a typical year and who attends. A school with a regular concert calendar will have more settled routines than one planning a first big production.
Music is examined under English GCSE and A level, Cambridge International, the IB and American routes. Cambridge International reports more than 10,000 schools in over 160 countries. If you have taught one board, mention how you would approach another and ask whether the school provides training.
Ask also about assessment and moderation. A department with shared marking and a clear scheme of work is easier to join than one where each teacher works alone.
If you are a performer without QTS, iQTS may fit. It needs a bachelor's degree, GCSE grade 4 equivalent maths and IELTS 6.5 or equivalent English, includes at least 24 weeks in a school in your own country, and lets you train for 5 to 11 or 11 to 18 age phases. Fees from the same page range from 7,950 to 9,950 pounds for the nine-month version.
