Foreign teachers in Vietnam work under a work permit system that was rewritten in August 2025. Allen & Gledhill reports that Decree 219/2025/ND-CP was issued on 7 August 2025 and took effect immediately, replacing the earlier decrees of 2020 and 2023. Schools that teach foreign programmes are also regulated as foreign-invested education businesses. For a UK teacher the practical questions are who sponsors the permit, which documents must be legalised, and whether the school is properly licensed.
Vietnam Briefing says the general expert test is a bachelor's degree or higher plus at least two years of relevant experience, down from three. A shorter track of one year applies to some priority sectors. It reports a permit lasts a maximum of two years, and that the authority must decide within 10 working days of a complete dossier. The whole process now takes about three weeks, it says.
Viet An Law's page on foreign teachers adds that a Vietnamese legal entity must sponsor the permit, so individuals cannot apply alone. It lists a health certificate from a Ministry of Health approved facility, a criminal record certificate, and a degree whose major suits the teaching post. It warns that teachers should not teach before the permit is granted.
Viet An Law says a foreign degree needs certification by the issuing country's foreign ministry, legalisation by the Vietnamese mission, then a notarised Vietnamese translation. Start this before you fly, because it involves your home government.
The same firm says an international teaching certificate is compulsory when your degree is unrelated to education, and says such certificates generally need 120 hours and a practicum. Its own FAQ says certificates are not mandatory in every case, so the page contradicts itself. Ask the sponsoring school exactly what its provincial office has accepted.
Decree 124/2024/ND-CP took effect on 20 November 2024. Allen & Gledhill reports that foreign-invested K-12 schools must commit at least VND50 million per student and VND50 billion in total, and that foreign programmes must be accredited in the home country and have run for at least five years.
Vietnam Briefing says all institutions must follow the national curriculum, that foreign-programme enrolment at preschool and compulsory level is capped below 50 percent, and that K-12 teachers need a bachelor's degree in pedagogy or an equivalent. Check how your own qualification maps onto that wording.

GOV.UK says British passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 45 days but tells readers to check with the Vietnam Immigration Department which visa or work permit they need to work. It warns that working illegally can lead to fines, deportation and a ban.
Viet An Law says a Vietnamese legal entity such as a school must act as sponsor, so you cannot file alone. Ask the school who prepares the dossier and who pays for legalisation and translation.
Vietnam Briefing and Viet An Law both say the maximum is two years. The permit period is set from documents such as your labour contract.
Viet An Law ties the certificate requirement to degrees unrelated to education, so a PGCE or education degree may suit the post. Confirm with the school, because provincial offices can read the rules differently.
