Teaching in Saudi Arabia: what to know

Saudi Arabia is the Gulf market where the paperwork is built around the sponsor. GOV.UK's living in Saudi Arabia guidance says you need an invitation through a sponsor, normally your employer, who is responsible for your welfare and conduct and who must arrange your residence permit, the Iqama. For a teacher, that makes the school contract the document that matters most.

The national education ministry is the Ministry of Education (moe.gov.sa), and a prospective school should be able to tell you how it is licensed and how your post is approved. Before you apply anywhere, read the FCDO's current travel advice for Saudi Arabia, because it is more restrictive than for most Gulf neighbours.

What the Iqama ties you to

GOV.UK says your Iqama must list your current employer, and that you cannot use an electronic visa waiver to work or be employed by a company in Saudi Arabia. You cannot change your job or transfer your sponsorship without your current sponsor's agreement, so GOV.UK advises getting legal advice before accepting a new contract.

To leave and re-enter the country the FCDO's entry requirements say you must get an exit or re-entry permit from your sponsor. If you leave on a final exit permit, you must apply for a new visa to return. Ask a prospective school how it handles both.

Medical report, qualifications and the labour complaint route

Work and residency permits need a medical report, and GOV.UK says the Saudi government will not grant permits to anyone testing positive for HIV/AIDS. It also says you may need to get your foreign qualifications recognised.

A FCDO guide published on 16 September 2026 explains that the Saudi Labour Law and its regulations govern employment, and that the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) handles private-sector labour disputes, with complaints through the Qiwa platform, the MHRSD website or the unified number 19911. GOV.UK also warns that you cannot leave the country once an employment case is in the labour courts. Read your contract's end-of-service and notice terms with that in mind.

The FCDO warning and the British-school inspection list

On 16 October 2026 the FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Riyadh province, Aseer, Najran, Jizan and the cities of Taif, Jeddah and Dammam, and against all but essential travel to all airports in Saudi Arabia except Medina. It also reported a serious incident at King Khalid International Airport on 10 October 2026. A school in any of those places needs a frank conversation about this before you accept, including how insurance and flights would work.

The Department for Education's list of British schools overseas accredited under its voluntary scheme, as updated on 5 October 2026, includes 13 schools in Saudi Arabia. The DfE marks the country with an asterisk, meaning schools there have met every standard they can legally meet under local law.

Questions teachers ask

Can I change school once I am in Saudi Arabia?

GOV.UK says you cannot change job or transfer sponsorship without your current sponsor's agreement. Take legal advice before accepting a new contract.

Can I come in on a tourist visa and look for work?

No. GOV.UK says you cannot use an electronic visa waiver to work or be employed by a company in Saudi Arabia. Your employer arranges the visa and Iqama.

Who handles pay disputes with a private employer?

The FCDO says the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development handles private-sector labour disputes, with complaints via the Qiwa platform, its website or 19911.

What does the FCDO currently say about travel?

As of 16 October 2026 it advised against all but essential travel to several provinces and cities and to most airports. Read the live page before you commit.
