Teaching in Bahrain: what to know

Bahrain regulates private schools through its Ministry of Education. A dedicated unit, the Directorate of Private Schools Licensing and Follow-Up, issues licences, inspects schools and, according to the Ministry, approves the recruitment of teaching and administrative staff. It is also where the attestation and equivalency of academic certificates is handled.

The Ministry's private education page lists 81 private schools, 14 educational institutes and 90,810 students in private schools, with national and international curricula on offer. For a teacher, that is a compact market where the licensing rules are national rather than split across emirates.

Staff approval inside the Directorate of Private Schools

Because the Directorate approves staff recruitment, a school cannot simply hire on its own say-so. Ask the school whether approval for your post has been requested and what it needs from you. The Ministry's page does not list the documents, so treat the school as the source for the checklist and confirm it against the Ministry.

The Ministry also announced on 15 October 2026 new licences for two private schools and 11 early education institutions, and the expansion of services at three existing private schools. It also recognised the Dogwood Diploma from Canadian School Bahrain as meeting its General Secondary Education Certificate standard. That tells you something about the curriculum mix: Canadian, French and English-language schools all appear in the Ministry's announcement.

Work permit, LMRA residency and the visit visa trap

GOV.UK's guidance says you must have a work permit, which your employer applies for, and that your employer should give you your residence permit and Bahraini ID card (CPR) when you arrive. The FCDO travel advice is blunter on one point: you cannot start employment in Bahrain if you enter on a visit visa, and residency is applied for through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.

GOV.UK adds that you may need to get foreign qualifications recognised, and may need a Good Conduct Certificate from the Bahraini police if you apply for a job when already living there. Check with the school which of these it will arrange.

Reading the FCDO page before you fly

The FCDO's Bahrain advice, checked on 16 October 2026, carries a regional tensions section and notes that airspace and the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia were closed at the same time in April 2026. Read it in full, and consider what that would mean for family, flights and insurance.

Questions teachers ask

Who approves teachers in Bahrain's private schools?

The Ministry of Education says its Directorate of Private Schools Licensing and Follow-Up approves recruitment of teaching and administrative staff. Your school should know where your application stands.

Can I take a job in Bahrain on a visit visa?

FCDO advice says you cannot start employment on a visit visa. Your employer should arrange a work permit and residency through the proper channels first.

How many private schools are there in Bahrain?

The Ministry of Education's private education page lists 81 private schools and 14 educational institutes, with 90,810 students, as of its July 2026 update.

Will my qualifications need recognising?

GOV.UK says you may need to get foreign qualifications recognised. The Ministry's Directorate handles attestation and equivalency of academic certificates, so ask the school which route applies to you.
