Teach Abroad Agencies

Guide · updated 2026-10-16

Do teachers pay international recruitment agencies?

It depends on the firm. Some, such as Teach Away, say their platform is free for teachers, while Search Associates states a US$100 yearly candidate membership. Ask any agency in writing what you will be charged and when.

There is no single rule for the sector. International teacher recruitment is a mix of free job boards, subscription-style memberships and fuller agency services, and each firm sets its own terms for candidates. The only reliable way to know what you will pay is to read the firm's own pages and get the answer in writing.

This guide sets out what three well-known organisations say about candidate costs on their own sites, then lists the questions worth asking before you hand over a card number or sign anything. Fees change, so treat every figure here as a snapshot dated 16 October 2026 and check the current page.

What Teach Away says about cost to the candidate

Teach Away's help centre states that it is 100% committed to providing a free platform for teachers to find their next job, and that you can create a profile and browse jobs without paying.

The same page points out that other costs of teaching abroad, such as visa application fees, moving costs and flights, are not charged by Teach Away. In other words, free access to the platform does not make the move itself free. Teach Away also sells courses and other products separately, so read what a button commits you to before you click it.

Search Associates: a yearly membership, not a placement charge

Search Associates publishes a candidate membership. Its educator sign-up page gives the price as US$100 per year and says the membership includes attendance at one job fair. A June 2024 announcement on its news page describes replacing a three-year membership with one-year options, with a discounted second year.

That is a fee for access to the service and its fairs. Search Associates does not publish, on the pages we could read, a statement about who pays any placement fee, so do not assume either way. Ask. Membership also does not cover your travel to a fair or your hotel.

Teacher Horizons and the free-to-candidate model

In an article it published in June 2026, Teacher Horizons describes its core service for teachers as free, available at no cost to the candidate, with paid add-ons such as a CV review. That is the company's own description, written by the company, so it is a statement of its position rather than independent verification.

The pattern across these three examples is that the basic route can cost nothing, a membership model can cost a modest annual sum, and optional extras can cost more. Which one you are buying matters more than the label on the website.

Questions to put to any agency before you sign up

Ask these in an email so you have the answer on record. Is there any charge to register or to apply? Is there a charge if I accept a post you introduce me to? Is there a charge if I leave the school early? Are CV reviews, coaching or certificates optional, and are they sold separately from the recruitment service?

Be cautious about anything described as a placement guarantee that you pay for up front. Check the contract wording, and keep copies of every payment. If a charge is a surprise after you have accepted an offer, you will be negotiating from a weak position.

Questions teachers ask

Is it normal for a teacher to pay to join a recruitment agency?

Practice varies by firm. Teach Away and Teacher Horizons describe their candidate services as free, while Search Associates charges a US$100 annual membership. Compare what each firm states on its own site.

What does the Search Associates membership include?

Its educator sign-up page says US$100 per year, including attendance at one job fair. Its fair schedule says fairs are open to active member educators and schools.

Do I still pay for visas and flights if the agency is free?

Yes, possibly. Teach Away's help page notes that visa fees, moving costs and flights are not charged by Teach Away, but they exist. Ask your employer which of these the school covers.

Should I pay for a CV review or course offered by an agency?

Treat these as optional products, not as the recruitment service. Teacher Horizons describes add-ons like CV review as paid extras. Decide on their merits and never feel they are a condition of being put forward for jobs.
