Teaching in Thailand: what to know

Thailand has two layers of paperwork for teachers: immigration permission to work, and a professional licence from the Teachers' Council of Thailand, known as Khurusapha. Private schools sit under the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC), part of the Ministry of Education. A UK teacher should expect the school to drive most of the process, but the order matters. Several steps depend on the one before.

OPEC licensing and what it means for your employer

JTJB, a Thai law firm, says private schools need an OPEC licence under the Private School Act B.E. 2550 (2007). The authorised director must be Thai and work full time at the school. For international schools it lists ratios of one teacher per 25 students at primary and one per 30 at middle and high school.

The same article says foreign teachers and administrators need work permits, visas, teacher licences and employment agreements. Before you accept an offer, ask to see the school's OPEC licence.

The Khurusapha teacher licence for foreign staff

A Thailand Starter Kit guide says foreigners need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit before they can apply for the licence. It describes a first temporary licence lasting two years and renewable twice, and a permanent licence of five years with unlimited renewals.

It says a bachelor's degree in any subject qualifies for the temporary licence. A permanent licence needs a recognised teaching qualification or the Teachers' Council's seven-module course. It adds that Khurusapha has not accepted online degrees since 2023, so check how your qualification was studied.

Legalising documents and the Apostille change

The same guide says your degree and transcript must be legalised by your home government and then by the Thai Embassy. It notes that Thailand's accession to the Apostille Convention takes effect on 28 February 2027. Ask the school which route applies on your start date.

Entering Thailand and where not to base yourself

GOV.UK says visa-exempt entry is for tourism only and does not cover business activities. To work, you must get the appropriate visa before you travel.

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and parts of southern Songkhla, and within 20km of the Cambodia land border.

Questions teachers ask

Do I need a Thai teaching licence as a foreign teacher?

JTJB lists teacher licences among the requirements for foreign teachers in private schools. Thailand Starter Kit describes a temporary licence for graduates of any subject. Ask your school whether it files the application for you.

Can I get a Thai work visa before I leave the UK?

GOV.UK says you must get the appropriate visa before you travel to work in Thailand. Thailand Starter Kit says the work permit is arranged by your school after you hold the visa.

Does Thailand accept an online degree for the teacher licence?

Thailand Starter Kit says Khurusapha has not accepted online degrees since 2023. Check with the Teachers' Council or your school before relying on one.

Which international accreditation do Thai schools need?

We could not confirm this from an opened official source, so this page makes no claim. Ask the school for its OPEC licence and accreditation documents.
