Teaching in Germany: what to know

Teaching is a state matter in Germany, not a federal one, and that changes the picture for a UK teacher. The rules on who can teach in a state school differ between Länder, while private and international schools make their own hiring decisions within the immigration rules.

Before comparing agencies, find out which kind of school the job is at, because the qualification route is very different for each.

Bavaria's rule on qualifications from outside the EU

The Bavarian government's service page on recognising foreign teaching qualifications states that the route is for teachers who qualified in an EU, EEA or Swiss country, and that qualifications from other countries, which it calls Drittstaaten, cannot be recognised for this purpose. A UK qualification now falls on the wrong side of that line.

For those who do qualify, the page describes a decision within three months of a complete application, no fee, and a check for substantial differences that can be closed by an aptitude test or adaptation course.

Berlin's application for fully qualified teachers from abroad

Berlin takes a different approach and processes applications from teachers who completed a teaching qualification abroad and want to teach in the city's public schools. The service page says applications are made online only, requires sworn German translations, and charges 85 euros for a brief or negative decision and 340 euros for a detailed one.

It says a decision follows four to six months after the documents are complete. A Goethe-Zertifikat C2 is listed as a document to submit if you hold one, not as a compulsory item.

What GOV.UK tells British visitors

GOV.UK says British citizens may visit Germany without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and that the rules for working there differ. To stay longer you must meet German entry requirements, and the German Embassy in the UK can say which visa or permit applies.

Time on a residence permit or long-stay visa does not count towards the 90 days.

Questions teachers ask

Can I teach in a German state school with a UK PGCE?

It depends on the Land. Bavaria's service page says recognition covers EU, EEA and Swiss qualifications only, while Berlin has a procedure for teachers qualified abroad. Check with the Land's education authority.

How long does Berlin take to decide a recognition application?

Berlin's service page says a decision follows four to six months after the complete documents are received.

Do I need German to teach there?

Bavaria's page says sufficient German is a requirement, and Berlin's page lists a C2 certificate among the documents if you already have one. International schools set their own language expectations.
