Teaching in Poland: what to know

Poland has a large and growing number of private and international schools, and UK teachers are a regular fit for English-medium posts. The practical question for a British passport holder is the legal route to employment, because the right to travel to Poland as a visitor does not include the right to work there.

Poland also borders Ukraine, which GOV.UK mentions in its current travel advice. That does not stop teachers working in the country, but it is a fact to read first-hand before you accept a post.

Staying beyond 90 days: what GOV.UK and the Polish authorities say

GOV.UK says British citizens can visit Poland and the rest of the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and that working in Poland has separate requirements. To stay longer you must meet Polish entry requirements, such as a visa or work permit, and the Polish Embassy in the UK can confirm which one applies.

Time spent in Poland on a residence permit or long-stay visa does not count towards the 90-day limit. Overstaying can lead to a Schengen ban of up to three years.

Reading the work-permit categories on the labour ministry's site

The Polish public employment service pages, authored by the Labour Market Department of the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy, list several routes for employing foreigners: work permits, seasonal work permits, a temporary residence and work permit, and work on the basis of employer declarations. The page was last modified in February 2025, so confirm that the categories are still current.

Which one fits a teacher depends on the employer and the contract. A school should be able to tell you in the first conversation which category it uses and who files the application. If an agency cannot answer that, treat it as a warning.

Residence applications go through the Office for Foreigners

The Office for Foreigners (Urząd do Spraw Cudzoziemców) handles residence permit applications through an online case module called MOS, and its site has a section for applications linked to Brexit. Its homepage also carries a notice about applications signed by unauthorised people, which is a reminder to deal only with your employer or a lawyer you have chosen yourself.

Keep copies of everything the school files on your behalf and ask for the case reference so you can follow progress.

Questions teachers ask

Can I teach in Poland with just a British passport?

Only for a visit. GOV.UK says staying beyond 90 days requires a visa or work permit and that working has different requirements from visa-free visits.

Who applies for the permit, me or the school?

The Polish labour-market pages describe permits in which an employer takes on the foreigner, and say you should check the category with the employer. Confirm in writing who files and who pays.

Where do I follow a residence application in Poland?

The Office for Foreigners runs the MOS online module for residence permit applications. Its site also has a section on Brexit-related applications.
