Teaching in Hong Kong: what to know

Hong Kong's international school sector is small enough to map. The Education Bureau's international schools portal says there are 53 international schools, 8 Private Independent Schools and 21 local Direct Subsidy Scheme schools offering non-local curricula. International and Private Independent Schools operate on a self-financing basis.

For a British teacher the practical questions are which curriculum a school runs, and how the job offer turns into a visa. GOV.UK says you can visit Hong Kong for up to 6 months without a visa, but you need a visa to work, so the school's offer has to come first.

Reading the Education Bureau's school categories

The Bureau says these schools generally offer curricula from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States, along with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

The Bureau compiles school profiles from voluntary contributions and annual enrolment surveys, and says enquiries should go to the schools directly. In practice it does not place teachers: each school hires for itself.

The General Employment Policy test

Immigration Department guidance says the applicant should normally hold a first degree in the relevant field, though strong technical qualifications or documented experience may be accepted in special circumstances. There must be a confirmed job offer for a genuine vacancy that cannot be readily taken up by the local workforce.

The package, including accommodation and medical cover, should be broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level for professionals in Hong Kong. The applicant must have no security objection and no known record of serious crime, and the Director of Immigration has absolute discretion.

Passport points before you fly

GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for at least one month after the date you plan to leave Hong Kong, and that you will be denied entry without a valid travel document. It also says Hong Kong no longer accepts BN(O) passports for immigration clearance.
