Teaching in Indonesia: what to know

Indonesia does not allow schools to market themselves as simply international. Schools with a foreign curriculum run as Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama (SPK), a partnership between an Indonesian institution and an accredited foreign one, under Ministry of Education Regulation 31 of 2014. A UK teacher needs to understand the SPK label and the separate manpower permit that the employer must obtain.

What an SPK school is

Sampoerna Academy's explainer says SPK schools use a foreign curriculum such as Cambridge or the International Baccalaureate, usually taught in English. Schools that once used the international label had to change to SPK status or become regular national schools.

It says they must teach Religious Education and Pancasila and Civic Education to Indonesian students, and Bahasa Indonesia to everyone. It also says an SPK must hold an A accreditation from BAN-S/M and is supervised by the Ministry of Education. When you review an offer, ask whether the school holds SPK status.

The RPTKA and the employer's role

Conventus Law says Indonesian rules centre on the RPTKA, a plan to employ expatriates in certain positions for a set period, approved by the Ministry of Manpower. An approved RPTKA serves as a work permit, but does not automatically grant the right to employ an expatriate.

It also says Government Regulation 34 of 2021 added an assessment step, and that each foreign worker needs their own permit arranged by the employer. We did not find a teacher-specific rule in an opened source, so ask the school which positions its RPTKA covers.

Entry and safety

GOV.UK says the 30-day visa on arrival is not suitable for all business activities, and that KITAS holders can extend through a sponsor. It says volcanic eruptions occur frequently across Indonesia and advises following local guidance.

Questions teachers ask

Can I teach in Indonesia on a visa on arrival?

GOV.UK says the visa on arrival is not suitable for all business activities and you may need a different visa. Do not start work until your employer confirms the correct permit.

What does SPK mean on a school website?

Sampoerna Academy explains it as a school run through a partnership with an accredited foreign institution under Regulation 31 of 2014. It is the lawful route for schools offering a foreign curriculum.

Who arranges the work permit?

Conventus Law says the employer arranges the permit through the Ministry of Manpower, and each worker needs their own. Ask who covers the costs and whether your spouse would need a separate permit.

Do international schools in Indonesia teach local subjects?

Sampoerna Academy says SPK schools must teach Bahasa Indonesia to all students and Religious Education and Civic Education to Indonesian students. Foreign staff usually teach the foreign curriculum subjects.
