Teaching in Taiwan: what to know

Taiwan publishes unusually detailed teacher criteria, but only for its public-school programme. The Ministry of Education's 2024 announcement, dated 22 March 2024, covers recruitment of 1,096 foreign English teachers and teaching assistants through the Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program.

Private and international schools set their own terms, so use the programme as a benchmark rather than a rule. GOV.UK says UK visitors can enter without a visa for 90 days, and that stays over 180 days need a visa obtained before arrival.

Teacher or assistant: the Ministry's tests

Applicants need a passport from a country where English is an official or common language, or one endorsed by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. A nationwide police check dated within 6 months of the job and work permit applications is required.

To be a teacher rather than an assistant, you need a state-issued teaching licence, or more than one year of teaching English at an accredited overseas school or as a full-time assistant in a participating domestic public school, plus an education or English degree with 120 or more hours of English language teaching coursework, or a TESOL, TEFL or CELTA certificate.

Pay and package as the Ministry states it

The Ministry says teachers receive a monthly salary, economy airfare, health and labour insurance, housing reimbursement and a year-end bonus based on performance review. For holders of a bachelor's degree the 2024 announcement gives NT$67,840 to NT$88,800 (about USD 2,188 to USD 2,864) a month, depending on education and experience.

Assistants receive NT$50,000 a month (about USD 1,612), plus the other benefits and reimbursement for certificate courses.

Youth Mobility holders

GOV.UK says holders of a Youth Mobility Scheme visa can apply to switch to a working visa. Contact the Taipei Representative Office in London or Edinburgh for specifics.

Questions teachers ask

Do I need a teaching licence in Taiwan?

For the Ministry's teacher route you need either a state-issued licence or a qualifying mix of teaching experience and coursework or certificate. Assistants do not need a licence.

Is a police check required?

For the Ministry programme, yes: a nationwide police check dated within 6 months before the job and work permit applications.

How long can I stay in Taiwan without a visa?

GOV.UK says up to 90 days, extendable by 90 days, and that stays over 180 days need a visa before arrival. Tourism does not permit work.

Do private schools follow the same pay scale?

Not as far as the official sources show. The salary range here is for the Ministry's public-school programme.
