Teaching in Egypt: what to know

The Department for Education's list of British schools overseas accredited under its voluntary inspection scheme, as updated on 5 October 2026, includes 11 schools in Egypt, a useful starting point for a UK teacher who wants a school inspected against English-style standards.

The education system sits under the Ministry of Education and Technical Education, whose information centre runs the online portal at emis.gov.eg. Its guidance on foreign teachers in private and international schools was not available to us at the time of writing, so we do not set out its rules here. Ask any school which approvals it holds for your post and check them with the Ministry.

The HIV test and what else FCDO says about working in Egypt

The FCDO's entry requirements for Egypt say you will need to show HIV test results to apply for a work permit. That is the only employment-specific requirement stated on its page, which otherwise covers tourist visas: e-visas valid for up to three months, or a visa on arrival valid for up to 30 days.

A visit visa is not a work permit. Ask your employer how the work permit and residence will be arranged, who pays for the test and paperwork, and in what order, before you buy a one-way ticket.

Where in Egypt the FCDO says to avoid

The FCDO advises against all travel within 20km of the Egypt-Libya border (except for a stated exception at El Salloum) and against all travel to North Sinai. It advises against all but essential travel to parts of South Sinai, the part of Ismailiyah east of the Suez Canal, much of the Western Desert, and the Hala'ib Triangle and Bir Tawil Trapezoid. Some areas in the Western Desert are listed as exceptions.

Check any school's location against that list before accepting. It also carries a regional tensions section, last checked on 16 October 2026, which reports an apparent drone strike on two ships moored off Damietta on 29 July.

Reading the British-schools list sensibly

Egypt is marked with an asterisk on the DfE's list for 10 of those schools, which the DfE explains means schools in that country have met every standard they can legally meet under local law. One further school is listed without an asterisk. Accreditation is voluntary and lasts three years, so a school's absence from the list is not a warning sign, and a school's presence is not a guarantee of your contract terms.
