Teaching in Nigeria: what to know

Nigeria has a professional regulator for teachers, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and a separate immigration track for foreign workers. FCDO advice varies sharply by state, so where a school sits matters. Treat any offer as conditional until you understand which of these applies to you.

TRCN registration: what its site says and does not say

TRCN's site says registration is a legal requirement for all teachers and lecturers working in Nigerian schools, and that teachers must be registered and licensed. The listed routes are Nigerian qualifications such as NCE, B.Ed and PGDE, and a Professional Qualifying Examination is described as mandatory for those with teaching qualifications.

The page covers Nigerian teachers abroad and does not address non-Nigerians teaching in Nigeria. Ask TRCN at info@trcn.gov.ng whether a visiting UK teacher needs registration. The Federal Ministry of Education site lists a National Policy on Non-State Schools in Nigeria, but We could not read its text.

Visa, CERPAC and the entry rules

GOV.UK says British citizens need a visa before departure and that visa on arrival is no longer available. The Nigeria Immigration Service says the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) is issued to foreign nationals who live and work in Nigeria, typically lasts up to one year and is required for stays beyond 56 days. Landing and exit cards have been mandatory since 1 May 2025.

We did not find the expatriate quota rules in an official source. Ask the school who handles the quota and visa category.

Reading the FCDO map

FCDO advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara and the riverine areas of several southern states. It advises against all but essential travel to a longer list including Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, Benue, Abia, Anambra and Imo. Check any school's location against the current page.

Questions teachers ask

Do I need a TRCN licence to teach in Nigeria as a foreigner?

The Nigeria Immigration Service describes it as a combined residence permit and alien card for foreign nationals who live and work in Nigeria. It says it typically lasts up to one year and can be renewed.

Can I get a Nigerian visa on arrival?

GOV.UK says visa on arrival is no longer available. You must obtain a visa before departure through the Nigerian Immigration Service portal.

Which states does FCDO advise against?

FCDO advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara, among other areas. Always read the current page, which lists further states.
