Teaching in Morocco: what to know

Morocco's route into teaching is shaped by one sentence in GOV.UK's living in Morocco guidance: to work in Morocco you need a work visa, and to apply for it you must have a job offer and authorisation to work, which your employer arranges. For a teacher, that places the school's paperwork ahead of your own.

GOV.UK also says the Ministry of National Education is responsible for the school system. We could not retrieve that Ministry's own guidance on foreign teachers, so the detail below comes from GOV.UK and the Department for Education, and anything about a particular school's approvals should be confirmed with the school.

From work visa to residence permit

GOV.UK says that to apply for a work visa you contact the Moroccan Embassy in London, and that once you arrive you must also apply for a residence permit. British nationals can stay without a visa for up to 90 days, after which you must register with the police and apply for a residence permit (Carte d'Immatriculation).

The application is made at the Foreigners' Office of the local police headquarters or at a gendarmerie in smaller towns. GOV.UK says you must provide 10 passport-sized photos and 2 legalised copies of the required documents, which may include a UK police certificate, a medical certificate from a local doctor and a Moroccan bank statement. You get a temporary residence card valid for 3 months while the permit is prepared.

Qualifications and what to ask a school

GOV.UK says that if you want to work in a regulated profession in Morocco you may need to get your foreign qualifications recognised. Whether that applies to a teaching post in an international school is not stated, so ask the school directly which of your documents it has submitted and which it expects you to legalise.

Because the residence permit rules ask for a UK police certificate, it is sensible to ask the school early which format and which legalisation it wants.

British-curriculum schools and the DfE list

The Department for Education's list of British schools overseas accredited under its voluntary scheme, as updated on 5 October 2026, includes 8 schools in Morocco. On 26 August 2026 two Moroccan schools (Everest International School and Khalil Gibran School) were added, and on 5 October 2026 two others were removed. Morocco is marked with an asterisk, meaning schools there have met all the standards they can legally meet under local law.

Accreditation is voluntary, so the list is a prompt for questions rather than a complete directory.

Travel advice and passports

The FCDO's Morocco advice was reviewed for accuracy on 19 August 2026. Its entry requirements say your passport must be valid for at least three months after you arrive, and that Moroccan authorities have denied entry to some travellers with damaged passports.
