Asia holds most of the world's international schools. ISC Research figures, reported by ICEF Monitor in February 2026, put 58 percent of the 15,075 international schools in the region, which makes it the biggest single market for teachers and the most varied.

Ask where in Asia you want to work, because a posting in Singapore and a posting in a smaller city on the mainland are different experiences.

Size, and a flattening in the largest market

ICEF reports that China still has the most international schools, but that its growth is flattening. The same report names Indonesia and Kazakhstan, with the UAE, among high-growth markets, although it gives no growth figure for those two. For a teacher this means opportunities are shifting towards places other than the biggest markets.

Over a third of schools worldwide offer bilingual instruction, and 78 percent follow a hybrid model combining local needs with global outcomes, so many Asian posts involve working alongside local-language teachers.

How two governments handle skilled workers

Hong Kong's Immigration Department describes its General Employment Policy as quota-free and not sector-specific, for applicants with skills or experience of value that are not readily available locally. Singapore's Ministry of Manpower says its Employment Pass is for professionals, managers, executives and technicians, with a minimum monthly salary threshold and a requirement that employers consider all candidates fairly.

These are examples, not a rule for the whole continent. Each country has its own pass categories and conditions, so check with the school and the official portal.

British school networks in Asia

The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) is one of the bodies GOV.UK lists as supporting British Schools Overseas. COBIS says it has members across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas, and Cambridge International reports schools in over 160 countries.

Questions teachers ask

Is Asia mostly British-curriculum schools?

No. Schools follow a wide range of curricula, including IB, American, Cambridge and national programmes. Always confirm the curriculum of the post.

Which Asian countries have the most international schools?

ICEF reports that about a quarter of the world's international schools are in China, India, the UAE, Pakistan and Indonesia, with China holding the most.

Do I need to speak the local language?

Rarely for teaching in an English-medium school, though it helps in daily life. Bilingual programmes may require more.
